The Perinatal Parent Support Program: Supported from the Start, supports families across the Ontario East health region, from early in pregnancy until their infants are 6 months old. This free, interactive, mostly virtual program offers perinatal education and support which provides seamless continuity of care through an innovative five pillar approach. This program is offered on a Facebook private group platform with sessions offered through Zoom. The use of social media in this way has facilitated rapid health literacy acquisition, knowledge dissemination, file sharing, targeted education, easy access to timely information. The 5 Pillar Approach
I. Prenatal Education/Support: Unique, live virtual sessions cohorted by gestational age delivered weekly throughout the entirety of the pregnancy.
II. Parent Education/Support: Live virtual discussion of topics relevant to parenting offered in the last weeks of pregnancy and first 6 months postpartum with an emphasis on reducing anxiety, building confidence, promoting responsive parenting, and early infant and child mental health.
III. Breastfeeding Education/Support: Both prenatal and post-partum access to virtual education/support groups; one-on-one lactation support (virtual and in-person); weekly virtual Q&A with a lactation consultant and in-person drop-in.
IV. Perinatal Mental Health Education/Support: Virtual education/support including managing anxiety for new and expectant parents (MAP) program, partner specific education and support, and perinatal mental health screening and referral.
V. One-on-One Support: Virtual and in-person one-on-one support to address individual needs not compatible with group learning; provide enhanced support to parents with high-risk pregnancies and/or complex needs and systems navigation.
